Fifth-graders completed their research on their eminent person and presented to family and students May 3. Second-graders visited the Des Moines Art Center and Pappajohn Sculpture Park to see the sculptures they have been studying at school during Artful Learning. They are studying Grant Wood’s “American Gothic” painting and learning about relationships. Within this unit, they are learning about farming, the Great Depression and ants. A field trip to Living History Farms is planned to experience life on farms and see how things have changed from then to now.
Forty students took a Saturday field trip to the Science Center of Iowa as a reward for good attendance in their after-school program. They started the day with a viewing of “Dinosaurs, Giants of Patagonia” at the IMAX. After an outside sack lunch, they explored hands-on exhibits. Other learning activities included a viewing of “Iowa Skies at Night” in the planetarium, “Sue Spotlight” by the dinosaur skeleton replica, and “Chemistry Experiments” using chemistry materials and effects on fire safety. The field trip was part of the 21st Century after-school grant program and the tickets were provided by Ankeny United Methodist Church.

A fun in the sun day was planned as part of being a Positive Behavior Supports school. Outdoor games and activities such as face painting and Frisbee golf were planned for the day.
Fifth-grade students entered a poetry contest over the winter, and five students were chosen to be put in the “Celebration of Poets” book. Fifth-graders are preparing for their field trip to J.A. Biztown. They will run the town for the entire day. PTA is providing them with pizza, and there will be items made by the students to buy with their “paychecks.”
Two final big activities for the year are field day and fifth-grade recognition.
Parents, staff and students participated in the annual Fun Day with 22 stations of activities, including Fling Its, Hula Hoop Relay, Hurdles, Dash, Kangaroo Race, Katch-A-Kup, Putting Away and Sack Race. Each participant received a ribbon at the conclusion of the event.
On May 16, students took part in planting a school garden with vegetables and other plants in raised beds. With help from Hy-Vee, the American Heart Association and parent volunteers, students will learn about how to grow and use their own vegetables.
In sixth-grade science, students finished a unit on states of matter. They did several lab experiments related to matter. They made Gak, a gooey concoction that challenged them to learn whether it was a liquid or a solid. It serves as a great visual tool for introducing students to the properties of polymers. In another lab based on the same teaching standard, students made homemade ice cream. The last unit of the year is weather.
The East High Golf Classic on May 10 and 11 raised more than $33,000. Graphics students made the sponsors new vinyl signs that were placed on the golf course.
The East High fashion show, “Glitz and Glam,” was presented May 7. More than 70 students participated in the event from sewing technology and fashion runway classes. Students designed, redesigned and completed outfits for the show. Directors for the show were Kenya Gonzalez, Kona Lumeh, Maria Fawzi and Amanda Hatfield. Outstanding participants in the fashion show were: Senior Line, Kenya Gonzalez; Top Designer, Samantha Fitzgerald; Avant Garde, Victoria Saingdsavath; Top Model, Meshell Kyles; Glitz and Glam, Jennifer Marquez.
Students in Lincoln’s PE ballroom dancing class are joining Jennifer Malcom-Brown and the Madhat Company in hosting a ballroom dance showcase at Lincoln. Students of the ballroom dance class will be showcasing several dances, including salsa, West Coast swing, waltz and a couple of special line dances. This will be a culmination of some of the dances they learned throughout the year. The teacher for the ballroom dance class is Sandra Trogdon.
The Ambassadors have conducted several volunteer projects over the spring semester. Examples include volunteering at Iowa Children’s Waterfest, participating in Rock In Prevention seminars at various elementary schools, helping out at the River Woods Elementary Fun Night and assisting with the McKinley Field Day. The Ambassadors are putting together a teacher appreciation breakfast for the end of the year as well as a program to promote Lincoln to the south-side middle schools. Joe Bianchi is the sponsor and teacher of the Ambassador’s program.
Three dozen students had their own artwork on display at the Super Fantastic Senior Art Show in one of the hallways at Lincoln. Each teacher that attended was given a ballot to vote for his or her favorite piece. A print of the winning piece will be made, framed and hung in the school as a legacy artwork. This will be a new tradition that will continue every year. Art teachers involved in this project are Laurie Phillips, Mara Brown and Heather Worthington.
Junior Lily Nellans was national runner-up at the National Individual Events Tournament of Champions in Original Oratory. Nellans’ oration is on changes that could be made to the event to help it meet more education common core standards. Nellans lost in the final round to a student from California.
