Senior doctors said the blood supply had been restored but it still remained to be seen how functional the arm would be in the long run.

Priyal and Purav, who runs a construction glass business , stay at Vasai. On Sunday, the couple and Purav's brother were returning from their hometown in Gujarat by Saurashtra Mail. As the train reached Nalasopara station around 6am, the accident occurred. "We were standing at the train's footboard. At Nalasopara, Priyal suddenly lost balance and fell," Purav said. "She did land on the platform but slipped into the gap. The train ran over her right arm, severing it from above the elbow."

Purav and his brother also jumped onto the platform; they rescued Priyal and picked up the severed limb and packed it in a clean plastic bag. "We took Priyal to Alliance Hospital in Nalasopara that sent her to Umrao Hospital ," Purav said.

At the hospital, the doctors performed the reattachment surgery from 9am to 5.30pm. "Priyal lost a lot of blood. We called our plastic surgeon who kept a sterile towel ready and prepared to reattach her arm. This saved time in the operation theatre. Her humerus bone had to be fixed, besides the arteries, nerves and veins," said Dr Ashish Banerji, CEO of Umrao Hospital . Eight bottles of blood components were transfused; Priyal is now put on ventilator and will remain in the ICCU for four more days. "She needs to undergo a few more surgeries . Two nerves (median and ulner) and the main artery have been repaired. She had a cut on her head but her CTscans show nothing abnormal," added Dr Banerji.

According to some in the hospital, Priyal might have fallen when she tried to jump off the train at Nalasopara. The train stopped only at Borivli but the family might have tried to jump off earlier when she must have lost her balance, a doctor said.

"I am now focusing only on my wife's health. I have switched off my mobile and taken a break from my business . She is still unconscious. I will be satisfied about the treatment only when she starts talking to me," Purav said.
